Abstract

Menstrual hygiene management is a crucial aspect of women's health, yet sustainable alternatives like menstrual cups face challenges in adoption despite their economic and environmental benefits. This study assesses awareness, adoption patterns, influencing factors, and barriers related to menstrual cups among women in Kerala. A survey of 300 participants was conducted, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, logistic regression, ANOVA, factor analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to understand the determinants of menstrual cup usage.

Findings reveal that 70% of women were aware of menstrual cups, but only 40% had adopted them. Higher education, peer influence, and medical recommendations positively impacted adoption, while social stigma, comfort concerns, cost, and accessibility were significant barriers. Awareness was found to increase knowledge levels, which in turn enhanced adoption likelihood. Economic analysis showed annual cost savings of INR 2,850 per user, highlighting the financial advantage of menstrual cups.

The study emphasizes the need for targeted awareness campaigns, policy interventions, affordability measures, and social acceptance strategies to promote menstrual cup usage. Addressing misconceptions, improving access, and leveraging peer influence can drive sustainable menstrual practices. The research contributes to the growing discourse on sustainable menstruation and gender-inclusive health policies, with implications for environmental conservation, women's empowerment, and public health strategies.
